(The Virji Family Collection)
This exhibition was extremely well received and hugely popular given the intrinsic connect with miniatures, mythology and Indian folklore. There was a steady stream of visitors to the Mezzanine level where the exhibition was showcased under the patronage of Sandeep & Gitanjali Maini Foundation.
Whilst it was not original miniatures, rather the folios, the interest it generated was tremendous given that they had been sourced from different collections globally. It encapsulated the objective of passing on the knowledge of miniature art which forms the basis of Indian art. That the rhythms of court, faith, and history, recorded so beautifully in miniature, still speak volumes was the USP of the exhibition.
SGMF’s support for the show was in line with the foundation’s objectives: the quiet custodianship of art, the imparting of knowledge across generations, and showcasing a legacy.
This collection was brought to light by Rozy and (late) Karim Virji and Hanifa Banjee, who generously entrusted it to us. The folios and paintings that were exhibited were sourced from celebrated museum collections and private collections, offering a rare opportunity to appreciate the breadth and depth of this artistic tradition.
